1. Canned foods

Canned foods come at low costs and you can find practically anything, from veggies to soups. But, canned foods contain tons of sodium as salt is used as preservative. Sodium affects kidneys which is why you should avoid these foods if you deal with this problem. If you really have to eat canned products, look for those labeled as “no salt added” or at least find products low in sodium. Rinse or drain your canned foods to lower the sodium content by 33-80%.

2. Dairy

Calcium in dairy increases the levels of this mineral in your urine. It increases the risk of forming kidney stones. If you already have kidney disease, avoid dairy to help your kidneys do their job properly.

Butter is packed with saturated fat and it increases the risk of developing heart disease. Heart disease is a common cause of kidney disease. Malfunctioning kidneys affect heart, too. Use olive oil to cook your meals.

3. GMOs

Most of the processed foods you eat is made from GMOs. We can’t say much about the long-term side effects of GMOs. However, studies have shown that they do affect the function of kidneys.

5. Nuts

Nuts are healthy for you, but that doesn’t apply to those who are prone to kidney stones. Oxalates in nuts are actually the most common type of kidney stones. If you are prone to kidney stones, stay away from nuts.

Oxalate is also found in beets, spinach, French fries, potato chips and bran flakes.

6. Soda

Is there anything great about soda? Regular consumption of soda increases the risk of developing chronic kidney disease. There is a strong link between energy drinks/soda and kidney stones.

7. Sugar

Sugar is found in almost anything, and you can’t avoid completely. But you can actually learn more about its sources and do not consume too much of it.
